Explanation
1 April is a joke day in English-speaking countries. People say funny things that are not true, and when the joke is revealed they say “April Fool!” After 12 o’clock we don’t make jokes. We make harmless jokes like: “Your bag is open – a mouse is in it!” — “April Fool!” Rule: a joke must not scare anyone, upset anyone or cause danger. Question: “Is it true?” — “Yes, it is. / No, it isn’t, it’s a joke.”
Worked examples
Last year on 1 April my cousin told me: There are no lessons today! I was very surprised. Then he smiled and said: April Fool!
— Is it true? — No, it isn’t. It’s a joke. — It’s a funny joke! I don’t do jokes that scare people.
Class activity
“Harmless joke”: in pairs make up one harmless joke, tell it to the class and say “April Fool!” All jokes must be safe and kind.
