I like playing ...
Textbook: p. 48
GoalThe “like + -ing” pattern; and ... too and but ... doesn’t; spelling of -ing.
New words
do sums · matematik misol yechmoqsew · tikmoqplay chess · shaxmat o‘ynamoqcircus · sirk
Explanation
To talk about activities we like we use “like + verb-ing”: “I like playing chess.” “She likes sewing.” Most verbs just add -ing: play → playing, do → doing. If a verb ends in -e, drop the e: write → writing. For short consonant-vowel-consonant verbs the last consonant doubles: sit → sitting, run → running. Same: “I like dancing and Kamola does too.” Different: “I like swimming but Bobur doesn’t.” With places: go to the circus → I like going to the circus.
Worked examples
I like playing chess and Jamshid does too. I like going to the circus but my sister doesn’t. She likes sewing and drawing.
Writing, running, sitting, doing sums, playing badminton – these are all -ing forms.
Class activity
“Find someone like you”: pupils say what they like (“I like drawing”) and stand up; anyone who agrees says “Me too!”
Practice
1
Write the -ing form: write, run, play, sit
writing, running, playing, sitting
2
Say: I like playing chess.
I like playing chess.
3
Join with and ... too: I like sewing. Dilya likes sewing.
I like sewing and Dilya does too.
4
Why write → writing (the e disappears)?
A final -e is dropped before -ing.
