Explanation
Animal sounds: dogs bark, cats meow, cows moo, sheep baa, horses neigh, hens cluck, roosters crow, ducks quack, geese honk, pigs oink. How they make the sound – with adverbs: loud → loudly, soft → softly, slow → slowly, noisy → noisily, happy → happily (y → ily). “My puppy barks loudly.” What they eat: “Dogs eat meat and bones. Cows eat grass. Hens eat corn.” Ability: “My dog can bark loudly.” After can the verb stays in the base form: She can sing.
Worked examples
Our dog barks loudly at strangers. Our old cat sleeps quietly on the sofa. The ducks swim slowly in the pond, and the rooster crows loudly at sunrise.
My fantasy goat can ride a bike. It can also count to ten and tell funny jokes.
Class activity
“Animal chorus”: groups choose an animal and say its sound with an adverb: “The duck quacks softly”. The class guesses the animal.
