Explanation
School places: a classroom, a playground, a gym, a canteen, a staff room, a library. We describe them with There is / There are: “There’s a library in our school. There are many books in it.” To describe a school: “Our school is old but nice.” But joins opposite ideas: “The classroom is small but bright.” Question: “Where’s the canteen?” — “It’s on the ground floor.”
Worked examples
Our school is small but modern. There’s a computer room on the first floor and a gym next to it. The canteen is near the library. The playground is behind the school.
— Is your school new? — No, it isn’t. It’s old but very cosy. — Is there a gym? — Yes, there is.
