He is tall and thin.
Textbook: p. 19
GoalDescribe a person’s build and looks: tall, thin, strong, short, plump; negative sentences.
New words
tall · novchathin · ozg‘instrong · baquvvatplump · to‘la, semiz
Explanation
To describe a person’s build we use the verb to be (is/are): “My uncle is tall and strong.” “His wife is short and plump.” Negative: is not = isn’t: “She isn’t tall.” For hair and eyes we use have/has: “He has short, black hair.” If there are several adjectives, we separate them with commas: “long, straight, dark hair”. Question: “What does she look like?” — “She’s tall and thin. She has blue eyes.” Remember: tall ≠ short.
Worked examples
— What does your teacher look like? — She’s tall and thin. She has short, straight, brown hair and green eyes. She isn’t old.
My grandfather is short and strong. He has white hair. My grandmother is plump. She has a kind face.
Class activity
“Who is it?”: the teacher describes a classmate without saying the name. Pupils guess: “She’s tall. She has long, dark hair.”
Practice
1
Ask: “What does he look like?”
What does he look like?
2
Make it negative: She is tall.
She isn’t tall.
3
Describe in English: a tall and thin boy.
He is tall and thin.
4
Why “He is strong”, not “He has strong”?
Strong is an adjective, so we use to be. Have goes with things.
