Pure and functional particles
Textbook: pp. 111–112
GoalDistinguish pure and functional particles; know the two functions of -u (-yu), -da, na ... na.
New words
pure particle · sof yuklamafunctional particle · vazifadosh yuklamafunction of conjunction · bog‘lovchi vazifasito replace · almashtirmoq
Explanation
Pure particles come only as particles and do no other job: faqat, axir, hatto, nahotki. Functional particles, depending on the sentence, can be either a particle or a conjunction: -u (-yu), -da, ham, na ... na. There is an easy way to tell them apart: try putting “va” in place of -u (-yu) or -da. If the meaning is not spoiled, it is a conjunction: Opa-yu singil keldi (= opa va singil — the sisters came). If “va” does not fit, it is a particle adding emphasis: Bu yil qor ko‘p yog‘di-yu! (It really snowed a lot this year!) In place of -da used as a particle, “ham” can often be put: Kitobni-da unutdi = Kitobni ham unutdi (He forgot the book too).
Worked examples
Kitob-u daftar sotib oldim (I bought a book and a notebook) — “-u” = va: a conjunction.
Yaxshi qiz-da! (What a good girl!) — “-da” expresses emphasis: a particle.
Class activity
The “va” test: try replacing -u (-yu), -da in sentences by “va”; if possible it is a conjunction, otherwise a particle.
Practice
1
Give two examples of pure particles.
Faqat, hatto.
2
When do -u (-yu), -da act as conjunctions?
When “va” can be put in their place.
3
Distinguish -u and -ku in “Sen-u men” and “Keldi-ku!”
Sen-u men — a conjunction (you and I); keldi-ku — an emphasizing particle.
4
Why are -da and na ... na called functional particles?
Because they act sometimes as particles, sometimes as conjunctions.
