Possessive suffixes in participles and verbal nouns
Textbook: pp. 50–51
GoalKnow the function of possessive suffixes in participles and verbal nouns.
New words
participle · sifatdoshverbal noun · harakat nomidoer · bajaruvchiperson and number · shaxs va son
Explanation
Possessive suffixes are added not only to nouns but also to the participle (-gan, -adigan etc.) and verbal noun (-sh, -ish etc.) forms of the verb. In such words the possessive suffix shows who did the action — the person and number of the doer: o‘qiganim (what I read), aytganing (what you said), kelishimiz (our coming). Because the person is clear from the suffix itself, adding words like “mening”, “sening” is often unnecessary: instead of “Mening kelishim” one says simply “Kelishim”. These forms can be the subject, object or predicate of a sentence: Aytganing to‘g‘ri chiqdi (What you said turned out right).
Worked examples
Chizganingni sinfga ko‘rsat (Show the class what you drew). — “chizganingni”: participle + -ing (you) + -ni.
Kelishimni kutma (Don't wait for my coming) — “kelishim”: verbal noun + -im (I).
Class activity
Change the persons: “o‘qiganim” → o‘qiganing → o‘qigani → ... ; use each in a sentence.
Practice
