to stretch when saying · cho‘zib aytmoqpause · to‘xtashcourage · jur’atspeed · sur’at
Explanation

The tutuq belgisi has two jobs. If it comes after a vowel, that vowel is stretched: ma’no, e’lon, she’r. If it comes after a consonant, we make a small pause after that consonant: jur’at, sur’at, san’at, qal’a (fortress).

Worked examples
After a vowel: ma’no (maa-no), ta’lim (education), a’lo (excellent).
After a consonant: jur’at (jur-at), qat’iy (firm), mash’al (torch).
Class activity

“Stretch or stop”: the teacher reads a word. If a vowel is stretched, children spread their arms; if there is a pause, they raise a hand like a stop sign.
