Consonants written with two letters: sh and ch
Textbook: Part 1, topic 6, pp. 76–87
GoalKnow that sh and ch are each one sound but are written with two letters.
New words
letter pair · harf birikmasicity · shaharstreet · ko‘chatea · choy
Explanation
In Uzbek the consonants sh and ch are written with letter pairs: s+h and c+h. But each one is a single sound. So a word can have more letters than sounds: ko‘cha — 5 letters, 4 sounds (k, o‘, ch, a).
Worked examples
shamol (wind) — 6 letters, 5 sounds (sh, a, m, o, l).
o‘quvchi (pupil) — 7 letters, 6 sounds (o‘, q, u, v, ch, i).
Class activity
“Two letters — one sound”: children get cards with s, h, c, h. The teacher says a word (choy, shahar); children put the cards together to make sh or ch and count the sounds.
