Sounds and letters
Textbook: Part 1, topic 1, pp. 4–15
GoalKnow what speech sounds are and that sounds are shown in writing by letters.
New words
sound · tovushletter · harfspeech · nutqto hear · eshitmoq
Explanation
We hear many sounds around us: leaves rustle, birds chirp, an aeroplane roars. Only people can build words and sentences out of sounds. The sounds we make when we talk are called speech sounds (nutq tovushlari). We say and hear a sound, and in writing we show it with a letter.
Worked examples
Sounds of nature: shitir-shitir (rustling leaves), chug‘ur-chug‘ur (chirping birds). Speech sounds: a, o, m, l.
In the word mushuk (cat) we hear 5 sounds: m, u, sh, u, k.
Class activity
“Open ears”: children sit quietly for a minute and listen to sounds in the classroom and outside. Then they say what they heard, and the teacher sorts them on the board into “speech sounds” and “other sounds”.
