Vowel sounds and letters

Textbook: Part 1, topic 2, pp. 16–29
GoalKnow the vowel sounds and the six letters that show them.
New words
vowel · unliair · havoobstacle · to‘siqlip · lab
Explanation

When we say a vowel, air passes freely through the mouth and meets no obstacle. Only voice is heard. Uzbek has six vowel sounds: a, e, i, o, u, o‘. The letters for them are also six: a, e, i, o, u, o‘. The letter o‘ looks like two marks but counts as one letter.

Worked examples
mehmon (guest) — 2 vowels (e, o). o‘zbek (Uzbek) — 2 vowels (o‘, e).
mehmondo‘st (hospitable) — 3 vowels: e, o, o‘.
Class activity

“Lip game”: the teacher mouths a vowel without sound (a, o, u, i, e, o‘). Children guess which vowel it is, then swap in pairs.

Practice
1
How many vowel sounds does Uzbek have? Name them.
2
How many vowels are in Samarqand?
3
Find the vowels: tuz (salt), qiz (girl), non (bread).
