Carrying a word over by syllables

Textbook: Part 2, topic 9, pp. 30–43
GoalCarry a word from one line to the next by syllables.
New words
to carry over, to copy · ko‘chirmoqline · qatorsyllable · bo‘g‘inhyphen · chiziqcha
Explanation

If a word does not fit at the end of a line, we carry it to the next line. A word can only be split at a syllable boundary. We put a hyphen at the end of the line: da-raxt, ol-cha, va’-da, san’-at. We may not split a word in the middle of a syllable.

Worked examples
Maktabimiz hovlisida katta da- / raxtlar o‘sadi. (Big trees grow in our school yard.) — the line breaks after the syllable da-.
Wrong: dar- / axt. Right: da- / raxt or daraxt- / lar.
Class activity

“Line length”: a short line is drawn on the board. Children show how to carry long words (mustaqillik, o‘qituvchi) over by syllables where they do not fit, and check each other’s work.
