Reviewing what we know about syllables

Textbook: Part 2, topic 8, pp. 20–29
GoalRecall what a syllable is and divide a word into syllables.
New words
syllable · bo‘g‘inlaw · qonunright · huquqeducation · ta’lim
Explanation

A word is built from syllables. A syllable is a part of a word said in one breath, with one opening of the mouth. To divide a word we say it slowly and clap for each part. We write syllables with hyphens: qo-nun (law), hu-quq (right), ta’-lim (education).

Worked examples
qo-nun (2), hu-quq (2), o-i-la (family, 3), mak-tab (school, 2).
Children’s rights: to get an education, to play, to live in a family.
Class activity

“Syllable claps”: the teacher says a word (huquq, oila, maktab). Children clap once per syllable, say the number, and write it on the board with hyphens.

Practice
1
Divide qonun into syllables.
2
How many syllables does oila have?
3
Write huquq divided into syllables.
