Explanation

The human ability to speak is called speech (nutq). We need speech to give people information about persons and things or to ask something. Animals also send messages with sounds: a dog barks, a cat meows. But building words from sounds and sentences from words is only for humans.

Worked examples
“Why do we speak?” We give each other news. We ask questions and get answers. We share our thoughts. We make friends. Animals, however, cannot build words and sentences. Only humans have speech.
Message: Men maktabdaman. (I am at school.) Asking: Sen qayerdasan? (Where are you?)
Class activity

“What if we could not speak?”: for a minute children try, without speaking, to tell a friend “Give me a pencil” using only gestures. Then they discuss how convenient speaking is.
