What is a word: sound, syllable, word and sentence

Textbook: Part 2, topic 11, pp. 56–71
GoalTell a sound, a syllable, a word and a sentence apart.
New words
sound · tovushsyllable · bo‘g‘inword · so‘zsentence · gap
Explanation

Sounds make syllables, syllables make words, words make sentences. A sound is the smallest piece; we hear it. A syllable is a piece with one vowel: o-na. A word names something: ona (mother). A sentence expresses a complete thought: Ona kitob o‘qiydi. (Mother is reading a book.) A word can sometimes be a single sound, like “A!” when we are surprised.

Worked examples
Sound: a. Syllable: ki. Word: kitob (book). Sentence: Kitob stolda. (The book is on the table.)
“Qizil kitob” (Red Book) — 10 letters, 10 sounds, 4 vowels (i, i, i, o) and 6 consonants.
Class activity

“Ladder”: a ladder is drawn on the board: sound — syllable — word — sentence. Children climb with the word qush (bird) and say what it is at each step (q-u-sh; qush; Qush uchdi. — The bird flew.).
