Explanation

The letter j stands for two different sounds. In jo‘ja, jasur, javon and Jamila it sounds like “dj”, a hard sound. In jirafa, jurnal, jeton and jemper it is softer, like “zh”. In writing both are the letter j.

Worked examples
Like “dj”: jo‘ja (chick), jasur (brave), javon (cupboard), jahon (world).
Like “zh”: jirafa (giraffe), jurnal (magazine), jeton (token), jemper (jumper).
Class activity

“Two baskets”: two baskets are drawn on the board. Children read word cards with j and put each in the hard-j basket or the soft-j basket.
