Working with a text and vocabulary

Textbook: p. 121
GoalWork on a text about the great scholar Ibn Sina and think about borrowed words.
New words
physician, healer (old word) · tabibwork (book) · asaruniversity · universitettextbook · darslik
Explanation

Mini-text: “Abu Ali ibn Sina was a great physician and scholar who lived in the 10th–11th centuries. His work «The Canon of Medicine» served as a textbook in European universities for several centuries. In Europe the scholar was called Avicenna.” Working on the text: mark unfamiliar words; find that «tabib» is borrowed from Arabic and «universitet» from European languages, while «darslik» is formed from an Uzbek word; divide the text into parts; the main idea: the scientific heritage of our great ancestors is recognized worldwide.

Worked examples
Tabib — a healer, a doctor (an old word).
Dars + -lik = darslik (textbook): a word formed with an Uzbek suffix.
Class activity

In groups fill in the table “Our great ancestors”: name, field, famous work or invention.
