Working with a text and vocabulary

Textbook: p. 142
GoalWork on a text about the family tree; learn kinship words.
New words
family tree · shajarageneration, descendant · avlodancestor · ajdodlineage · nasl
Explanation

Mini-text: “A family tree is a record depicting a family’s origin in the shape of a tree. The roots stand for our great-grandfathers, and the branches for our parents, siblings and generations like us. A person who knows his family tree respects his ancestors.” Working on the text: clarify the words shajara, avlod, ajdod; make an outline; state the main idea: knowing your origin is respect for your ancestors. The word «shajara» is taken from Arabic «tree».

Worked examples
Ajdod — forefathers; avlod — later generations.
Shajara is a borrowed word, from Arabic.
Class activity
