Pairs of voiced and voiceless consonants
Textbook: Part 1, topic 4, pp. 46–59
GoalKnow the voiceless partner of a voiced consonant and understand that at the end of a word the saying and writing differ.
New words
pair · juftbook · kitobmountain · tog‘how it is said · aytilishi
Explanation
Some voiced consonants have a voiceless partner: b–p, d–t, g–k, v–f, z–s, g‘–x, j–ch, j–sh. At the end of a word a voiced consonant is said like its voiceless partner. For example, we say “kitop” but write kitob (book).
Worked examples
Written → said: kitob → kitop, obod → obot (prosperous), barg → bark (leaf), tog‘ → tox (mountain).
tez → tes (fast), avtobus → aftobus (bus), burj → burch (tower), garaj → garash (garage).
