Words that differ by one sound
Textbook: Part 1, topic 1, pp. 4–15
GoalFind words that differ by only one sound and know that their meanings differ.
New words
to differ · farqlanmoqto replace · almashtirmoqflower · gulash · kul
Explanation
Some words differ by only one sound, but their meanings are completely different. If we replace one sound, we get a new word: gul (flower) — kul (ash), uy (house) — oy (moon), bola (child) — lola (tulip). That is why we must pronounce every sound carefully.
Worked examples
qo‘l (hand) — ko‘l (lake); tosh (stone) — tush (dream); bosh (head) — qosh (eyebrow).
Mazali non. (Tasty bread.) → Mazali nok. (Tasty pear.) One sound changed, and the meaning changed.
Class activity
“Sound wheel”: the teacher writes “-osh” on the board. Children put different sounds in front to make words: bosh, qosh, tosh, yosh. The group with the most words wins.
