Jobs at school
Textbook: p. 6
GoalName the jobs of people who work at school and describe their work with the Present Simple.
New words
librarian · kutubxonachicleaner · farrosh, tozalovchisecretary · kotibacook · oshpaz
Explanation
School has many different workers: teacher, librarian, cleaner, cook, secretary, doctor, director. We describe their work with the Present Simple: “A cook makes lunch.” With he, she and it the verb takes -s: work – works, help – helps, clean – cleans. In questions and negatives we use do/does and the main verb stays without -s: “Does she clean the school?” — “Yes, she does.” / “No, she doesn’t.” Before a job name use a or an: an before a vowel sound (an architect), a before a consonant sound (a cook).
Worked examples
“Our school family”. Our school has many helpers. Mrs Karimova is a teacher and she helps us learn English. Mr Anvar is the cook; he makes hot soup every day. The secretary answers the telephone in the director’s office. The cleaner starts work early, so the classrooms are clean at eight o’clock.
— Do you work with books? — Yes, I do. — Do you help children find them? — Yes, I do. — You are the librarian!
Class activity
“Who am I?” A pupil takes a job card and the class guesses with “Do you …?” questions (Do you cook lunch? Do you teach English?). Answers are only “Yes, I do.” or “No, I don’t.”
