A wedding in Fergana

Textbook: p. 9
GoalName relatives, use the possessive ’s and describe wedding preparations with the Present Continuous.
New words
relative · qarindoshcousin · amakivachcha / xolavachchaget married · turmush qurmoqwedding · to‘y
Explanation

Relatives: parents, grandparents, uncle, aunt, cousin, niece, twin. Possessive: add ’s to a singular noun (my father’s brother); after a plural noun that ends in -s add only ’ (my parents’ house). Something happening now uses the Present Continuous: am/is/are + verb-ing: “My aunt is cooking.” When adding -ing a final -e is dropped (make – making) and a short verb doubles the last consonant (run – running). Negative: “She isn’t cooking.” Question: “Is she cooking?”

Worked examples
“A busy Saturday”. Today is my cousin Malika’s wedding. Many relatives are visiting our house. My aunt is cooking soup, my uncle is carrying chairs into the yard and my little brother is blowing up balloons. I am helping my mother with the flowers. Everybody is busy, but everybody is happy.
My father’s sister is my aunt. My parents’ parents are my grandparents.
Class activity

“Family charades”: a pupil mimes an action of a family member and the class guesses: “Is he making tea? — Yes, he is.”
