New words

Explanation

Weather is what the air is like today or this week; climate is the usual weather of a place over many years. To know the climate we must record the weather for a long time. Main climates: hot and wet near the Equator, in rain forests (the Amazon, the Congo, Indonesia); hot and dry in deserts (the Sahara, the Kyzylkum); warm in temperate regions; cold near the Arctic Circle and the Antarctic Circle, in the tundra. Animals fit the climate: tigers live in hot, wet forests, camels live in hot, dry deserts, and arctic foxes and polar bears live in the cold north. Question: “What’s the climate like in Central Africa?” — “It’s hot and wet.” Present Simple: “Camels live in hot dry places.”

Worked examples
“Climates”. Near the Equator, in countries like Indonesia and Brazil, the climate is hot and wet. The Sahara Desert has a hot and dry climate, and camels live there. Near the Arctic Circle it is very cold, and arctic foxes live in the tundra. Uzbekistan has hot dry summers and cold winters.
