When’s your birthday?

Explanation

Ordinal numbers are made by adding -th to the cardinal number: four – the fourth. Exceptions: one – first (1st), two – second (2nd), three – third (3rd), five – fifth, eight – eighth, nine – ninth, twelve – twelfth; 20 – twentieth, 21 – twenty-first. Dates: “My birthday is on the 3rd of February.” (the third of February). Use on with a day or date, in with a month or year: on the 14th of June, in June, in 2013. Years: 1949 – nineteen forty-nine; 1981 – nineteen eighty-one; 2000 – two thousand; 2008 – two thousand and eight; 2018 – two thousand eighteen. Questions: “When’s your birthday?” “When were you born?” — “I was born in 2013.”

Class activity

“Bingo”: write years (1949, 1968, 1981, 2000, 2008) on a card. The teacher reads them aloud and you mark them. Shout “Bingo!”
