Explanation
In English fairy tales usually begin with “Once upon a time …”. Events are told one after another in the Past Simple: “A king lived in a big castle. One day he decided to find a clever helper.” We must know irregular verbs: be – was/were, go – went, see – saw, tell – told, say – said, find – found, take – took, can – could. To describe a character: “The character is a good girl. She has a grandmother. She likes flowers. She doesn’t like wolves.” Question: “Do you like fairy tales?” — “Yes, I do. I like stories about clever animals.” Story linkers: one day, then, after that, suddenly, at last.
Worked examples
“The little fox and the moon”. Once upon a time a little fox lived in a dark forest. One night he saw a big silver moon in the water of a lake. “I want to catch it,” he said. He jumped into the lake, but the moon moved away. The fox tried again and again. At last a wise old owl said, “The moon is in the sky. You can see it, but you can’t catch it.” The fox understood and went home happy.
— Do you like fairy tales? — Yes, I do. — Who is your favourite character? — The wise owl.
