New Zealand is in the Pacific Ocean, to the east of Australia. It has two big islands: North Island and South Island. The capital is Wellington (on North Island) and the biggest city is Auckland. On South Island are the Southern Alps; the highest peak is Mount Cook (Aoraki), 3,724 m high. On North Island Lake Taupo is the biggest lake in the country, a good place for fishing and resting. Near Rotorua there are hot springs and the culture of the native Maori people. The population is about 5 million. In a letter we can make suggestions: “We can go to the lake. We can walk and climb in the mountains.” Wish: “I would like to visit Lake Taupo because it is a good place for fishing.”
Worked examples
Dear Laura, I’m glad you want to visit New Zealand! You can arrive on Sunday, and we can meet you at Wellington airport. On Monday we can fly to South Island and walk in the Southern Alps. The air there is fresh and clean. On Tuesday we can go to Lake Taupo for fishing and a rest. I think you will love it! Write soon, Susan
I would like to go to Lake Taupo because you can fish and relax there.
