Save water!
Textbook: p. 68
GoalTalk about saving water: the Aral Sea, wasted water, advice.
New words
waste · isrof qilmoqsave · tejamoqtap · jo‘mraklitre · litr
Explanation
Since the 1960s the Aral Sea has become much smaller: much of the water of the Amu Darya and the Syr Darya was used to irrigate fields, and little reached the sea. A new desert, the Aralkum, appeared where the sea used to be. We need water for drinking, washing and watering plants. We can save it: “Don’t leave the tap running when you brush your teeth.” “Have a short shower, not a long bath.” “Water the garden in the evening.” A running tap wastes many litres every minute, and a bath takes more than a hundred litres. Advice: should / can / don’t. -ing forms: wasting, saving, running (the consonant doubles).
Worked examples
“Save water!”. Water is precious. When you brush your teeth, you shouldn’t leave the tap running because you waste many litres. A shower uses less water than a bath. We can also water the plants with water from the washing-up. Small things can help: if every pupil saves a bucket of water a day, our school saves a lot.
Don’t leave the tap running. Turn it off while you brush your teeth.
Class activity
“Save-water poster”: groups make a poster with 3 rules (Don’t …, Turn off …, Use …).
Practice
1
Give advice: turn off the tap while brushing teeth.
Turn off the tap when you brush your teeth.
2
Negative command: leave the tap running.
Don’t leave the tap running.
3
Add -ing: waste, save, run
wasting, saving, running
4
Why did the Aral Sea shrink?
The river water was used for irrigation, so little reached the sea.
