Explanation

Kangaroos live in Australia. They eat grass, plants and leaves and hop around; a big kangaroo can hop faster than 60 km an hour. A baby kangaroo is called a joey and lives in its mother’s pouch for several months. Koalas live in Australian eucalyptus forests, eat only eucalyptus leaves and sleep up to 18–22 hours a day. A kiwi is a small bird from New Zealand; it has small wings and cannot fly, but it can run fast. Can: “Kiwis can’t fly, but they can run fast.” Present Simple: “Koalas live in Australia.” “A koala sleeps a lot.” These animals are typical of Australia and New Zealand.

Worked examples
“Animals down under”. Australia and New Zealand have special animals. A kangaroo hops fast and carries its baby, a joey, in a pouch. A koala sits in a eucalyptus tree and sleeps for most of the day. A kiwi is a small brown bird. It can’t fly, but it can run quickly, and it lives only in New Zealand.
— Can a kiwi fly? — No, it can’t. — Can it run? — Yes, it can.
