Changing and shortening a text

Textbook: Part 4, topic 26, pp. 60–71
GoalChange and shorten a text while keeping its meaning; put sentences in the right order.
New words
order, sequence · ketma-ketlikto shorten · qisqartirmoqto change · o‘zgartirmoqextra · ortiqcha
Explanation

When we shorten a text we remove extra sentences, but the meaning must not change. When we change a text we replace some words with words of similar meaning. The sentences must follow the order of events: first what happened, then what happened next, finally what happened at the end. If the order is wrong, the meaning becomes unclear.

Worked examples
Out of order: Then the bread baked. Mum kneaded the dough. At the end we all ate bread. Right order: Onam xamir qordi. (Mum kneaded the dough.) Keyin non pishdi. (Then the bread baked.) Oxirida hammamiz non yedik. (At the end we all ate bread.)
“Katta, chiroyli, qizil olma pishdi” (A big, beautiful, red apple ripened) — shortened: “Olma pishdi.”
Class activity

“Sentence cards”: each group gets cards with jumbled sentences. Children put them in order of events to form a text and read it aloud.

Practice
1
Put the sentences in order: Biz gulni sug‘ordik. Biz gul ekdik. Gul ochildi. (We watered the flower. We planted a flower. The flower bloomed.)
2
Shorten the sentence: Kichkina oppoq mushukcha yumshoq ko‘rpachada uxladi. (The tiny snow-white kitten slept on a soft mattress.)
3
Replace chiroyli (beautiful) with a word of similar meaning.
