Explanation

Words in a sentence are linked by meaning. If we take two linked words out of a sentence, they still make sense: “kichkina chumolilar” (small ants), “don yig‘adi” (gather grain). Words that are not linked make no sense: “kichkina yig‘adi” is wrong. We can show links in a diagram with arcs.

Worked examples
Kichkina chumolilar yozda don yig‘adi. (Small ants gather grain in summer.) Links: kichkina — chumolilar; yozda — yig‘adi; don — yig‘adi.
Core words: chumolilar yig‘adi.
Class activity

“String links”: children hold word cards; linked words hold each other with a coloured string. They say which words are not connected.

Practice
1
Which word is linked to chumolilar: kichkina or yozda?
2
Find the pair linked by meaning: qizil olma / qizil yuguradi.
3
Find the linked words: Katta fil sekin yuradi. (The big elephant walks slowly.)
