§ 25. Al-Khwarizmi, founder of classical algebra: expressing cause; clauses of cause
Cause answers «почему? отчего?». In a simple sentence: «из-за» + genitive (negative or neutral cause): «из-за дождя»; «от» + genitive (feeling or state): «от радости»; «благодаря» + dative (positive cause): «благодаря поддержке тренера»; «в результате» + genitive: «в результате исследований»; an adverbial participle: «Выучив правило, мы выполнили задание». In a complex sentence: «потому что», «так как», «поскольку», «оттого что», «ввиду того что». A clause of cause usually follows the main clause and is set off by a comma. Muhammad ibn Musa al-Khwarizmi (c. 780–850) came from Khwarezm and worked in the House of Wisdom in Baghdad; the word «algebra» comes from «al-jabr» in his treatise, and «algorithm» from the Latinised form of his name.
“Why?”. In pairs one states an event, the other gives the cause with different constructions (из-за, благодаря, потому что).
