§ 23. Abu Ali ibn Sina, founder of modern medicine: expressing time «в эпоху, во времена…»; fractional numerals
An adverbial of time answers «когда? как долго? с какого времени?». The phrases «в эпоху», «во времена», «в период», «в годы» take the genitive: «в эпоху Возрождения, во времена Ибн Сины, в годы учёбы»; «в течение» also takes the genitive: «в течение года». In fractions the numerator is a cardinal (feminine: «одна, две») and the denominator an ordinal: with numerator 1 it is nominative singular («1/5 — одна пятая»), with 2 or more it is genitive plural («3/4 — три четвёртых», «5/8 — пять восьмых»); ½ is «одна вторая» or «половина». Both parts of a fraction decline: «о трёх четвёртых», «с двумя третьими». Abu Ali ibn Sina (c. 980–1037) was born near Bukhara; his «Canon of Medicine» (Al-Qanun fi’t-Tibb) was taught in European universities for centuries.
“Clock and fractions”. Fractions 1/2, 1/4, 3/4 are on the board; pupils read them: «три четверти часа».
