§ 10. Discoveries that changed the world: the conjunctive words «где, куда, откуда»
«Где» shows place (where?), «куда» direction (where to?), «откуда» source (where from?). These words do not change and join the subordinate clause to the main one; at the same time they work as adverbials inside the clause. In an explanatory clause: «Я знаю, где находится лаборатория». In an attributive clause they depend on a noun of place: «Это город, где работал учёный», «Вот страна, куда он мечтал поехать», «Это архив, откуда взяты документы». The clause is set off by commas. Discoveries: Gutenberg’s printing press (about 1450, Mainz), Fleming’s penicillin (1928, London), Bell’s telephone (1876, USA).
“Where–to where–from where?”. The teacher gives a main clause («Я не знаю…», «Покажи…», «Скажи…») and pupils continue with the right word.
