Объяснение
In Grin’s story a hungry young man, John Eve, faints on a London street, and the rich Stilton picks him for a “joke”. Stilton promises Eve a monthly sum on one condition: every evening from five until midnight a lamp with a green shade must burn in his window, and Stilton will not say his name. When direct speech becomes indirect, punctuation and pronouns change: a statement uses «что», a question uses «ли» or a question word, and a command uses «чтобы» with the past tense. For example: «Тренер сказал: “У нас новая форма”» → «Тренер сказал, что у них новая форма». «Гость спросил меня: “Вы меня помните?”» → «Гость спросил меня, помню ли я его».
Примеры
Statement: «Мама сказала: “Завтра я вернусь поздно”» → «Мама сказала, что завтра она вернётся поздно». «Я» → «она», no quotation marks.
Question and command: «Врач спросил: “Вы принимали лекарство?”» → «Врач спросил, принимал ли я лекарство». «Врач сказал: “Отдохните”» → «Врач сказал, чтобы я отдохнул».

“What was said”. One pupil says a direct sentence; another repeats it in indirect form («он сказал, что…»).
