§ 1. State. Country. The Republic of Uzbekistan: subject–predicate relations; the logical subject in the instrumental case
Subject and predicate are linked by two models. In the first, both stand in the nominative, with a dash or «это» between them: «Узбекистан — республика», «Ташкент — это столица». In the second, more formal model, after the verbs «являться», «считаться», «называться» the predicate noun goes into the instrumental («кем? чем?»): «Ташкент является столицей», «Самарканд считается древним городом». In a passive sentence the grammatical subject receives the action and the doer — the logical subject — stands in the instrumental: «Парламент принял закон» → «Закон принят парламентом»; such sentences usually have a short passive participle («принят, избран») or a verb in «-ся» («избирается»). A state is a system of power and laws, a country is a territory and its people, and a republic is a form of state whose leaders are elected.
“Say it formally”. The teacher says a sentence in the «… — это …» model; pupils repeat it with «является» or «считается», then turn one active sentence into a passive one.
