§ 14. Scientists who changed the world. Sergey Pavlovich Korolev: the changing conjunctive words «какой, чей»
Sergey Pavlovich Korolev (1907–1966) was the chief designer of Soviet rocket and space technology. Under his leadership the world’s first artificial satellite was launched on 4 October 1957, and on 12 April 1961 Yuri Gagarin flew into space in the «Vostok» spacecraft. «Который» picks out a particular object: «Инженер, который руководил работой, был строг». «Какой» adds a comparison and usually goes with «такой» in the main clause: «Он сделал такое открытие, какого раньше не было». «Чей» shows possession and declines (чей, чья, чьё, чьи): «Учёный, чьи идеи изменили науку, жил в Калуге» — about K. E. Tsiolkovsky (1857–1935).
“Which word?”. The teacher gives the start («Мы читали о человеке, … мечты…»); pupils choose «который / какой / чей».
