§ 1. State. Country. The Republic of Uzbekistan: subject–predicate relations; the logical subject in the instrumental case

Textbook: pp. 6–8
GoalDistinguish the words state, country and republic; express the subject–predicate relation with the models «что — это что» and «что является / считается чем»; put the doer of a passive sentence (the logical subject) in the instrumental case.
New words
государство · davlatстрана · mamlakatявляться, считаться · hisoblanmoqграничить · chegaradosh bo‘lmoq
Explanation

Subject and predicate are linked by two models. In the first, both stand in the nominative, with a dash or «это» between them: «Узбекистан — республика», «Ташкент — это столица». In the second, more formal model, after the verbs «являться», «считаться», «называться» the predicate noun goes into the instrumental («кем? чем?»): «Ташкент является столицей», «Самарканд считается древним городом». In a passive sentence the grammatical subject receives the action and the doer — the logical subject — stands in the instrumental: «Парламент принял закон» → «Закон принят парламентом»; such sentences usually have a short passive participle («принят, избран») or a verb in «-ся» («избирается»). A state is a system of power and laws, a country is a territory and its people, and a republic is a form of state whose leaders are elected.

Worked examples
Two models: «Нукус — столица Каракалпакстана» → «Нукус является столицей Каракалпакстана». «Столица» (nominative) → «столицей» (instrumental).
Active: «Строители возвели мост». Passive: «Мост возведён строителями». «Строители» moves from the nominative («кто?») to the instrumental («кем?») — this is the logical subject.
Class activity

“Say it formally”. The teacher says a sentence in the «… — это …» model; pupils repeat it with «является» or «считается», then turn one active sentence into a passive one.

Practice
1
Rewrite with «считаться»: «Навруз — весенний праздник».
2
Put the words in brackets in the right form: «Хиву называют (музей под открытым небом)».
3
Turn the active sentence into a passive one: «Жители города посадили деревья».
4
Why do we say «столицей», not «столица», in «Ташкент является столицей»?
