Explanation

In complex numerals both parts decline («пятидесяти», «двухсот»), in compound numerals every word does; in compound ordinals only the last word. When direct speech becomes indirect, a statement takes «что», a question takes «ли» or a question word, a command takes «чтобы», and pronouns change to fit. An explanatory clause is separated from the main clause by a comma and answers «что? о чём?». The verb of the main clause matters: «сказал, знаю, думаю» → «что»; «попросил, хочу, требую» → «чтобы»; «видел, слышал» → «как». When revising, make up one example of your own for every rule.

Worked examples
Mixed example: «Директор сообщил, что на выставку пришло около трёхсот пятидесяти человек». «Что» introduces an explanatory clause; «трёхсот пятидесяти» is fully declined.
Indirect: «Учитель попросил: “Принесите проекты”» → «Учитель попросил, чтобы мы принесли проекты».
Class activity

“Name the rule”. Teams race to name the rule (logical subject, numeral, indirect speech or subordinate clause) that fits the sentence on a card.

Practice
1
Write in words in the genitive: 1 500.
2
Make it indirect: «Он спросил: “Когда начнётся концерт?”»
3
Insert the word: «Я видел, … рабочие строят мост».
4
Why is «Мама попросила, что я помог» wrong?
