Explanation

The logical subject is the doer in a passive construction; it stands in the instrumental: «Дом построен рабочими». The parts of a compound sentence are joined by coordinating conjunctions: connecting («и, да, также, тоже»), contrastive («а, но, однако») and disjunctive («или, либо, то…, то…»). A comma normally stands before them, but not when there is a shared secondary member or homogeneous members. When revising, first identify the type of conjunction, then check the punctuation. An assessment lesson usually contains sentence building, gap filling and a short piece of writing.

Worked examples
All kinds together: «Школа построена рабочими, и вокруг неё посадили сад, а рядом открыли библиотеку».
Analysis: «Мы выберем экскурсию или проект». Here «или» joins homogeneous members, so there is no comma.
Class activity

“Find the mistake”. The teacher writes five sentences with wrong punctuation; groups find and correct the errors.

Practice
1
Name the type of conjunction: «Он старался, но результат был скромным».
2
Make it passive: «Студенты написали проект».
3
Complete: «… светило солнце, … шёл снег».
4
Why is there no comma in «Мы дома сидели и читали»?
