§ 11. Scientists who changed the world: clauses with «который»; «то, которое; тот, который»; verbal nouns
«Который» declines like an adjective: its gender and number agree with the noun in the main clause, while its case depends on its role in its own clause: «Учёная, которая открыла радий, получила две Нобелевские премии»; «Учёный, о котором мы говорим, жил в Париже». The clause follows the noun it defines and is set off by commas. A demonstrative may stand before the defined noun in the main clause: «Это то открытие, которое изменило медицину», «Это тот учёный, который…»; without a noun we use «тот, кто…», «то, что…». Verbal nouns: «открыть — открытие, исследовать — исследование, наблюдать — наблюдение». Marie Skłodowska-Curie was born in Warsaw in 1867, discovered polonium and radium in 1898, and won Nobel Prizes in physics (1903) and chemistry (1911).
“Define and join”. Two cards: a noun and extra information. Pairs join them into one sentence with «который».
