Explanation

An adverbial of purpose answers «зачем? для чего? с какой целью?». In a simple sentence: «для», «ради», «в целях» + genitive; «с целью» + genitive or an infinitive: «Он приехал в Казань для работы», «Учёные собрались с целью обсудить результаты». In a complex sentence: «чтобы», «для того чтобы», «с тем чтобы». If both parts have the same subject, an infinitive is used: «Он учился, чтобы стать инженером». If the subjects differ, the verb is in the past tense: «Он объяснил, чтобы все поняли». Nikolai Ivanovich Lobachevsky (1792–1856) was rector of Kazan University and the founder of non-Euclidean geometry; his idea changed Euclid’s axiom about parallel lines (1826).

Worked examples
