Explanation

A clause of manner tells how the action is carried out and answers «как? каким образом?». The main clause often contains the demonstrative «так», and the subordinate clause is joined by «как, что, чтобы, словно, как будто, точно»: «Он говорил так, что все слушали» (a shade of result), «Солдаты шли так, словно не знали усталости» (comparison). The clause is set off by a comma. Alexander Vasilyevich Suvorov (1730–1800) was a Russian commander and generalissimo; he set out his rules in «Наука побеждать». In 1799 his army crossed the Alps.

Worked examples
«Он командовал так, что даже новобранцы действовали уверенно». «Так» + «что» gives a shade of result.
«Отряд двигался так, словно дорога была ровной». «Словно» introduces a comparison.
