§ 15. Young inventors: the imperative mood
Textbook: pp. 52–54
GoalForm the imperative (singular, plural/polite, joint action, third person) and use it for requests, advice and prohibitions.
The imperative expresses a command, request, advice or prohibition. The second-person form is built from the stem of the third-person plural of the present or simple future: a stem ending in a vowel takes «-й» («читают → читай»); a consonant stem with stress on the ending or a consonant cluster takes «-и» («говорят → говори», «помнят → помни»); stress on the stem and a single consonant gives «-ь» («встанут → встань»). «-те» is added for the plural and polite form: «читайте, говорите, встаньте». Joint action: «давайте проверим», «пойдёмте»; third person: «пусть каждый попробует». A prohibition normally uses an imperfective verb: «Не открывай!». Exceptions: «есть → ешь», «пить → пей», «дать → дай».
Worked examples
A young inventor gets advice: «Собери модель из бумаги, проверь её и запиши результат. Не включай приборы без взрослых!»
Plural and polite: «Расскажите о вашем проекте». Joint: «Давайте обсудим идею». Third person: «Пусть изобретатель покажет модель».
Class activity
“Tasks for the inventor”. One pupil is the “inventor”; another gives instructions: «Нарисуй…», «Принеси…» (safe classroom objects only).
Practice
1
Form the second-person imperative: читать, писать, говорить, встать.
читай; пиши; говори; встань
2
Write in the plural/polite form: «Принеси бумагу», «Помоги другу».
Принесите бумагу. Помогите другу.
3
Make prohibitions («не» + imperfective): открывать окно, трогать провода.
Не открывай окно! Не трогай провода!
4
Why do we say «Не открывай» and not «Не открой»?
A prohibition normally takes an imperfective verb: «открывай».
