Explanation

In a complex sentence one part (the subordinate clause) is joined to the other (the main clause) by a conjunction or conjunctive word. An explanatory clause fills a missing element of the main clause and answers «что? о чём?»: «Учитель сказал, что завтра будет экскурсия». «Что» introduces a fact, «чтобы» a wish, request or necessity, and «как» a perceived process: «Я видел, как продавец считает деньги». The subordinate clause is separated from the main clause by a comma. The first coins appeared in Lydia in the 7th century BC; paper money was used in China about a thousand years ago; the sum was introduced in Uzbekistan in 1994; one ruble equals 100 kopecks.

Worked examples
«Историки установили, что первые монеты появились в Лидии». Main clause + «что» clause, with a comma before it.
«Мама попросила, чтобы я сходил в магазин». «Чтобы» + past tense expresses a request. «Я слышал, как звенят монеты»: «как» expresses perception.
Class activity
