Explanation

In analysing synonymy we determine the type of the conjunction-less composite sentence, the relation between its parts and its punctuation, and then convert it into another type of composite sentence. In converting, the conjunction is chosen by the relation: “lekin”, “ammo” for contrast, “chunki” or “shuning uchun” for reason, “agar” or the conditional (-sa) for condition. The punctuation changes too: a comma replaces the dash. To check that the meaning has not changed we compare the new sentence with the original. Sometimes conversion changes the meaning slightly, so we always watch the content.

Worked examples
Original: Sabr qil – murodga yetasan. 1) conjunction-less; 2) relation – condition; 3) dash. Conversion: Sabr qilsang, murodga yetasan. (subordinate, -sa).
Original: Bog‘ kichik – daraxti ko‘p. 1) conjunction-less; 2) contrast; 3) dash. Conversion: Bog‘ kichik, lekin daraxti ko‘p. (linked, adversative).
Class activity

“Converters”: groups take a conjunction-less sentence card, convert it to another type and prove the meaning is kept.

Practice
1
State the steps of converting a conjunction-less sentence into a subordinate one.
2
Rewrite “Hamma yig‘ildi – dars boshlandi” with “chunki” or “shuning uchun”.
3
Write “Ish oson – vaqt kam” with an adversative conjunction.
4
Why do we check the meaning after conversion?
