Explanation

In some composite sentences there is no conjunction or word taking its place between the parts: they are related in meaning and joined to each other only through intonation. Such sentences are called composite sentences without a conjunction. Between the parts, intonation and a pause do the linking. Various relations of meaning are possible between the parts: simultaneity and sequence, contrast, simile and comparison, condition, reason-result, explanation. In analysis the pattern of such a sentence is shown by two rectangles joined by a straight line. Composite sentences without a conjunction are compact and expressive and are frequent in proverbs, maxims and poetic speech.

Worked examples
Quyosh botdi, osmon qizardi. (sequence, simultaneity) / Bahor keldi – dalalar ko‘kardi. (reason-result)
Uyda hech kim yo‘q: hamma bozorga ketgan. (explanation) / Kecha sovuq edi – bugun iliq. (contrast)
Class activity

“Intonation workshop”: pupils say one conjunction-less sentence with different intonation; the class names the relation (sequence, contrast, explanation).
