Explanation

In the consolidation lesson we summarise all knowledge about the composite sentence with direct speech. It consists of the author’s words and direct speech, whose arrangement is expressed in four patterns. The punctuation depends on the pattern: author’s words first – a colon and quotation marks; after – a dash and lowercase letter; in the middle – dashes on both sides. In a dialogue each line begins on a new line with a dash. Indirect speech gives the content of direct speech in the form of a simple sentence. We apply this knowledge in exercises on punctuation and on changing sentence types.

Worked examples
First: Qizim so‘radi: «Bugun nima pishiramiz?» After: «Bugun palov pishiramiz», – dedi oshpaz.
In the middle: «Bugun, – dedi oshpaz, – palov pishiramiz». Indirect: Oshpaz bugun palov pishirishlarini aytdi.
Class activity

“Three-line scene”: groups write a short dialogue and retell it with direct and indirect speech.
