Explanation

A composite sentence is built from two or more grammatical bases. By how its parts are joined it falls into three types. In a linked composite sentence the parts are joined as equals by coordinating conjunctions (ammo, lekin, yoki and the like) or by the words bo‘lsa, esa and the particles -u (-yu), -da. A subordinate composite sentence has a main clause and a subordinate clause; the subordinate clause is joined to the main clause by a conjunction, a postpositional construction, -ki, a correlative word, deb, or the conditional mood -sa. In a composite sentence without a conjunction the parts are joined only by intonation, so punctuation matters most: an explanation takes a colon, a contrast a dash, a sequence a comma.

Worked examples
1) Havo ochiq edi, ammo shamol esib turardi. – linked. 2) Agar vaqtingiz bo‘lsa, kutubxonaga kiring. – subordinate. 3) Uning gapi shirin – ishi achchiq. – without a conjunction.
Order of analysis: 1) how many bases? 2) what joins the parts? 3) what is the type? 4) why this mark? For example «Biz bilamizki, ertaga qor yog‘adi»: two bases; -ki joins them; subordinate composite sentence; a comma stands between the parts.
Class activity

“Three houses”: three houses labeled linked, subordinate and without a conjunction are drawn; pupils place sentences in the right house and name the linking means.
