Explanation
A speaker or writer may give another person’s words without changing a single letter, exactly as that person said them. Words given word for word in this way are direct speech (ko‘chirma gap); the part telling who said them and how is the author’s words (muallif gapi). Together the two parts form a composite sentence with direct speech. The author’s words usually contain a word of speaking or thinking: dedi, so‘radi, javob berdi, deb yozdi. Direct speech is put in quotation marks or given on a new line with a dash. Example: Ustoz dedi: «Imtihon ertaga bo‘ladi». Here “Ustoz dedi” is the author’s words and “Imtihon ertaga bo‘ladi” is the direct speech.
