Explanation

We get energy from electricity, gas and coal. Even making tea or coffee uses energy. If we use a lot of energy, global warming (the warming of the Earth’s climate) becomes stronger. Saving energy: “Switch off the light when you leave the room.” “Turn off the TV when you don’t use it.” Kettle: “If you want three cups of tea, put three cups of water in the kettle.” Here if + Present Simple is followed by advice (should / can / a command). “If we use less energy, we help the planet.” Question: “How can we save energy at home?”

Worked examples
“Tea and energy”. Every day people drink millions of cups of tea and coffee. When we boil water, we use electricity or gas. Often we fill the kettle with too much water. If you want two cups of tea, you should boil only two cups of water. Then you save energy, water and time. It is a small thing, but it helps our planet.
If you leave the room, switch off the light. If we save energy, we help the planet.
Class activity

“Slogans”: groups draw a picture and write a short slogan: “Save energy! Switch off!” and show it to the class.
